How I Teach the Game of Golf

I learned how to play the game of golf, and teach the game of golf, from several of the top instructors in the world of golf.

Those instructors are: Former U.S. Open Champion Ken Venturi, Former Master's Champion Claude Harman and his son Dick Harman, former P.G.A. Champion Jerry Barber and his brother Willie Barber.

The basics of my instruction are very simple. There are really only six or seven concepts I follow. They are:

Grip

               Posture

                                    Stance

                                                       Balance

                                                                               Alignment

                                                                                                      Takeaway

                                                                                                                          Downswing

                                              Keep it Simple !

THE GOLF SWING

Grip - Most important part of golf swing !!!!!
           For right handers -
                 - Last three fingers of the left hand
                 - Middle two fingers of right hand
                 - V's point to right shoulder

Stance - feet about as wide apart as shoulder's
point toes out a bit - allows for freer body movement

Balance - weight should be equally distributed on both feet

Alignment - feet, knees, hips, and shoulder's should line
                     up parallel to "target line"

Two "imaginary lines" -

1- target line - through the ball to the target

2- body line - feet, knees, hips, and shoulder's should line
                                 up parallel to target line
                                 these lines never intersect !!!
                                 like railroad tracks !!!

Posture - stand tall, bend from the knees, bend from the
waist, drop your hands (hands should now be beneath chin) Relax !

Takeaway - Weight transfers to back foot

Downswing - Weight transfers to forward foot

Finish - 75% of weight is now on forward foot with body
              now facing the target

NOTE * * *
On the takeaway and the downswing when the
club reaches the parallel position to the ground, the
club should be lined up in a straight line to the target.

     This is important.

When you finish the swing, the body, and
the right and left thigh should face the target with most
of the body weight on the left side.
More on the Golf lesson:
For people who might struggle with a back problem or have
trouble finishing the golf swing:

My suggestion -

Begin your address position with feet, knees,
hips, and shoulders parallel to the target. Now
just  pull your left foot back about 6 to 9 inches,
so you are now lining up about 25 degrees off
the target line.

The feet knees, hips, and shoulders, will all be
lined up in this new direction. The purpose of this
new stance, is to allow you to finish the
golf swing.

There will be less stress on your back with this
open stance back. You will now be able to clear your left
side on the downswing.

You must face your target with your
knees and your chest.

You'll do Great

THE SHORT GAME

Choose a club where the will land on the front part of the green and roll to the hole - preferably a 7, 8, 9, pitching wedge or sand wedge
  • Open stance
  • Keep feet close together, pull forward foot back 6 inches
  • Play ball back of center, place hands ahead of the ball
  • Put more weight forward or on forward foot
  • Limit the amount of the lower body
  • Cock wrists slowly on takeaway - more the further away the ball is from the pin
  • Make sure you hit down on the back of the ball
  • Strike down on the ball with good arm extension, hands ahead of the ball at the finish
